The IROQUOIS Mk. 1. was designed by Rod Macalpine-Downie in 1965. She was undoubtedly the best sailing and most attractive cruising catamaran yet designed. Rod Macalpine-Downie designed the MK II version in 1968, whilst the length and beam remained constant the sections of each hull were increased thus making her more of an offshore boat and also increasing her interior accommodation. The IROQUOIS is still the worlds most beautiful cruising catamaran in the 30 feet range and for performance has an unprecedented coastal and offshore sailing reputation. On deck the IROQUOIS offers a great deal of working and leisure space and only the best equipment such as, silver anodised mast and boom with roller reefing, stainless steel and terylene rigging, stainless steel bottlescrews, pulpit, stanchions and deck fittings. All exterior woodwork is in oiled teak, Lewmar sheet and halyard winches, mainsheet roller traveller, all necessary sheets, blocks and ground tackle are standard equipment. The IROQUOIS mast can be easily lowered, without the need for any sophisticated equipment. The IROQUOIS' out-standing windward performance is achieved by the use of easy-to-operate tipping board. Sails, ground tackle, spare warps, winch handles, etc. can all be kept in the large self-draining sail lockers, anchor locker, cockpit lockers and aft lockers. The majority of IROQUOIS have used out-board motors varying in size from 10-50 HP for auxiliary power. Twin diesels or single diesel with twin hydraulics are offered as optional systems of power. The interior is finished in teak with soft furn-ishings in vinyl or optional fabric. She has two private double staterooms, two single berths a double saloon berth, w.c./washbasin compart-ment with optional shower and large galley with sink and double drainboards and cooker with two burners, grill and oven. There are ample hanging lockers and storage space including a self-draining oilskin locker. The chart table is the envy of many a yachtsman allowing a full size chart to be displayed leaving plenty of room for instruments and navigational aids. IROQUOIS has sailed across the Atlantic many times and as far afield as New Zealand and Australia from Brightlingsea with short-handed and full crews. IROQUOIS' performance allows one to travel further during a day, weekend or vacation period and sailing 'on the level' is the most pleasant way for the whole family. |
